The Spokane City Council is considering an ordinance titled “Immigration Enforcement Free Zones” that would ensure city-owned property cannot be used to support immigration enforcement.

Documents show that the ordinance would prohibit staging and surveillance by federal agents on city-owned property and parking lots without a judicial warrant. The ordinance would also require city departments to identify all properties and display signage indicating that they may not be used for immigration enforcement.

The language in the ordinance describes that these steps are meant to increase protections of people who are immigrants and refugees, and to decrease incidents of profiling.

Spokane Police Chief Kevin Hall also addressed the council during Monday’s meeting, noting that neither police nor the city can work with federal immigration authorities or interfere with verified federal immigration enforcement.

The Council will hold an official vote on the ordinance at its Monday night Legislative Session on February 23.
