Mahmoud Khalil, SIPA ’24, will be rearrested and deported to Algeria, Tricia McLaughlin, Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary for public affairs, announced Thursday, as the federal government furthers its ongoing deportation case against the Palestinian advocate, who was previously held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention for 104 days.

“It looks like he’ll go to Algeria,” McLaughlin said in a Thursday NewsNation interview. “It’s a reminder for those who are in this country on a visa or on a green card, you’re a guest in this country, act like it. It is a privilege, not a right, to be in this country.”

The announcement from the DHS official comes after the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the decision that released Khalil from the detention center where he was previously held in a 2-1 ruling on Jan. 15. During his time in ICE detention, Khalil, a lawful permanent resident with no criminal record, missed his graduation from the School of International and Public Affairs and the birth of his first child.
