An NHS nurse has been stripped of her licence after she posted online saying that “foreigners” who come to Britain will end up “being your rulers”. Hospital ward manager Roberta Batchelor shared a series of anti-immigration posts on social media, a disciplinary panel heard.
The senior nurse posted one image of Arab men chasing a child with a knife with a caption that criticised the state for protecting mosques. The nurse shared one post saying “foreigners who live in your land will gain more and more power” and that they will become “rulers” in Britain. Batchelor admitted being “caught up in the unrest in the country”. She has been struck off after a disciplinary panel found that the posts “sought to cause offence to immigrants… and those of Muslim faith”. She later claimed she was “disgusted” with herself for sharing the posts, blaming Labour Government policies for making her “angry”. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) heard that Batchelor worked for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust as a ward manager.
Batchelor, who said she had “loved” going to work for over 40 years, shared anti-immigration social media posts in August 2024. These posts included a split image showing a boat filled with people arriving at the beach captioned “these give nothing and get everything” and a homeless veteran captioned “these give everything and get nothing”.
Another post had an image of a child being chased by men, one wielding a knife, captioned: “Next time when you pay your taxes, remember that some of your money goes to the ‘protection of Mosques’.â€
A third post claimed to highlight a section of the Bible, stating: “Foreigners who live in your land will gain more and more power, while you gradually lose yours.”
It continued: “They will have money to lend you, but you will have none to lend them. In the end they will be your rulers.â€
Her final social media post had a split image showing a security inspection captioned “YOU AT THE AIRPORT” and a man departing from a boat captioned “MUHAMMAD AT DOVER”.
In the same month, the trust received a complaint from a member of the public about Batchelor’s social media, alleging that the posts were racially abusive. An investigation was launched, and the posts on her Facebook account which targeted Muslims and immigrants to the United Kingdom were found.
During the investigation, the nurse admitted to making the posts and apologised.
Batchelor was found to have breached a number of rules in the NMC’s code, including to “treat people with kindness, respect and compassion”, to “make sure you do not express your personal beliefs (including political, religious or moral beliefs) to people in an inappropriate way” and to “use all forms of spoken, written and digital communication (including social media and networking sites) responsibly”.
Batchelor agreed with the NMC that her social media posts amounted to serious misconduct. She told the NMC that she was “disgusted” with her own comments as much of her family are from ethnic minority backgrounds, and asked them to remove her from nursing because she “shouldn’t have that privilege”.
The nurse said: “I was posting horrible stuff on Facebook I was angry because at the time the government was going to take away the elderly’s TV licence and winter fuel – I allowed myself to get caught up in all the unrest in the country.
“I cannot forgive myself for doing this as all my family are black and ethnic minority. I find it very difficult to forgive myself for doing this ridiculous thing. I apologised to all my family and friends also work friends who knew it wasn’t something I would do without a reason.
“So for my sanity I wish to be removed from nursing as I don’t feel I should have that privilege.”
Batchelor added: “I fully except [sic] responsibility for my actions.
“I would like to say how I feel so disgusted with myself for being so angry that I took this out with horrible stuff on Facebook I should never allow myself to get into such a situation as a professional.â€
But the NMC found that nurse’s apology did not constitute ‘serious reflection’ for her ‘racially motivated and discriminatory actions’, and agreed with Batchelor’s wish to be removed from nursing.
The NMC panel said: “This happened on several occasions and is evidence of deep-seated attitudinal issues.
“Mrs Batchelor’s actions were significant departures from the standards expected of a registered nurse, and are fundamentally incompatible with her remaining on the register.
“The panel was of the view that the findings in this particular case demonstrate that Mrs Batchelor’s actions were serious and to allow her to continue practising would give rise to a real risk of harm to the public and undermine public confidence in the profession and in the NMC as a regulatory body.
“The panel considered that a striking off order is necessary to protect the public and to mark the seriousness of Mrs Batchelor’s misconduct and underpin the importance of maintaining public confidence in the profession, and send to the public and the profession a clear message about the standard of behaviour required of a registered nurse.”
