A new report claims that Washington state mistakenly gave almost 700 commercial driver’s licenses to non-citizens over the past seven years. The licenses allowed non-citizens to drive buses and trucks despite the non-citizens not being qualified to receive the commercial driver’s licenses.
The Washington State Standard reported that the state of Washington discovered that 685 commercial driver’s licenses were mistakenly issued to non-citizens over the past seven years. The discovery came after Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant truck driver, killed three people in Florida while making an illegal U-turn. Washington’s Department of Licensing later determined that Singh was wrongfully issued a commercial driver’s license.
According to The Post Millennial, despite being unqualified for a normal commercial driver’s license, Singh was able to obtain a license from Washington and later obtained a California commercial driver’s license prior to the fatal crash in Florida. The outlet noted that after the crash, the attorney general in Florida asked the Supreme Court to prohibit California and Washington from giving commercial driver’s licenses to non-citizens.
Following the fatal crash in August, Washington’s Department of Licensing found that 685 commercial driver’s licenses were mistakenly issued over a period of seven years. The Washington State Standard reported that all of the licenses were active at the time the mistakes were discovered by the department and that the number did not include licenses that had already lapsed.

In a statement obtained by the Washington State Standard, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Transportation claimed that Washington’s “failure to follow federal law is a blatant breakdown in its responsibility to protect the public.”
“By handing out standard CDLs to drivers who were never eligible, Washington sent unsafe foreign drivers onto highways across America and put countless families in danger,” the spokesperson added. “This is exactly the kind of negligence Secretary Duffy is working to eliminate. Following the law is not optional.”
The Washington State Standard reported that Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has threatened that President Donald Trump’s administration could withhold federal highway funding from states that wrongfully give licenses to illegal immigrants and non-citizens.
In an email obtained by the Washington State Standard, Nathan Olson, a spokesperson for the Washington Department of Licensing, addressed the issue of commercial driver’s licenses being improperly issued to non-citizens. “Errors have been addressed, and DOL is working to make changes in our system, process, procedures, and training to prevent mis-issuances in the future,” Olson said.
