FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is dedicating every possible resource to ensuring American jobs aren’t lost to artificial intelligence, she told The Daily Signal in an exclusive interview.

“You’ll see the media talk about, the fear mongering—you’re gonna lose your job—but I can tell you this,” she said, “We are deploying everything we can here at the Department of Labor to make sure that that exactly doesn’t happen.”

Geoffrey Hinton, a British computer scientist widely dubbed the “Godfather of AI,” has predicted “massive unemployment caused by AI.” AI expert Stuart Russell said AI can do “everything we currently call work.” Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque predicts by mid-2028, cognitive labor will become “economically worthless” because AI is smarter than humans.

But DeRemer expects to see more job creation than losses.

“We want Americans to be comfortable to know that our job is to protect their job,” she said. “That’s what the Department of Labor does. So I’m excited about AI.”

She said the issue is a priority for President Donald Trump.

“It’s top of mind for the president, and I think it’s top of mind for the president specifically, because of how exciting it is. Transformational. Really, we’re going to see a new era, just like we saw in the industrial age, the technology age,” she said. “We’re seeing the age of AI, and it’s transformative in job creation. We will see more job creation because of AI than we’re going to see any possible displacement.”

DeRemer aims to work with companies across the country to “make sure they have the skilled workforce that answers the market demands, not to determine what those market demands are.”

She sits on the president’s AI task force, which works to make Americans proficient in AI so the U.S. wins the AI race.

“Not only is it a matter of national security, it’s a matter of job security here,” she said. “We want to make sure that our employees across this nation and employers understand how great AI can affect their jobs.”

The administration has deployed millions of dollars to more than 81 programs to train the workforce in AI.

“What we don’t want to do is lose this race to another country, and the president has been clear on that,” she said. “So, I would say to the future workforce of America, the Department of Labor is here to answer those market demands.”

Labor is collecting data points from the private sector about what they need and how the Labor Department can train the future workforce in AI.

“It’s a net positive for this country, and I’m excited to do it,” she said. “I have a whole team in place, and we’re ready to go.”
