A 42-year-old woman was recently arraigned after being charged for participating in an “international alien smuggling conspiracy” that involved smuggling illegal immigrants across the northern border between the United States and Canada.

In a Friday press release, the Department of Justice announced that Stacey Taylor, a 42-year-old resident of Plattsburgh, New York, was arraigned last Monday following a grand jury indictment on October 2 that charged her for allegedly participating in an “international alien smuggling conspiracy that brought aliens primarily from India into the United States across the northern border.”

The Justice Department explained that court records show that Taylor’s vehicle was interdicted by U.S. Border Patrol agents near Churubusco, New York, in the early morning of January 20. Border Patrol officials discovered four foreign nationals in the 42-year-old’s vehicle during the incident.

According to the press release, the four foreign nationals included three Indian nationals and one Canadian national. Officials determined that the four foreign nationals had crossed the U.S.-Canadian border “illegally, without inspection, in the freezing cold.”

The Justice Department confirmed that an examination of Taylor’s phone revealed text messages that indicated she had been involved in “multiple other smuggling ventures” in the days leading up to the January 20 incident. The Justice Department also noted that following her arrest in January, Taylor was stopped in August as part of a “suspected alien smuggling venture” and was “implicated in alien smuggling” as recently as September.

“According to the indictment, Taylor is charged with conspiring with others to engage in alien smuggling, and four counts of alien smuggling for profit, with three counts being second or subsequent offenses,” the Justice Department stated in Friday’s press release. “If convicted, she faces a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison per count of alien smuggling for profit, and additional time for second and subsequent offenses.”

The Justice Department confirmed that the investigation into Taylor’s alleged smuggling activity is due to the efforts of Joint Task Force Alpha, which is a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department.

According to the press release, the work conducted by Joint Task Force Alpha has led to over 425 domestic and international arrests of organizers, leaders, and significant facilitators of illegal immigrant smuggling, over 375 U.S. convictions, over 325 significant jail sentences, and the forfeitures of substantial assets.
