The Catania Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested nine years of imprisonment for three Egyptian men accused of participating in the gang rape of a 13-year-old girl in the public restrooms of Villa Bellini in Catania back in January last year.
Prosecutor Anna Trinchillo also requested a sentence of five years and four months for a fourth accomplice who cooperated with investigators in identifying the rest of the group.
The prosecutor’s sentencing requests were presented before the Second Criminal Section of the Catania Court on Tuesday.
The rape took place on the evening of Jan. 30, 2024, in the Bellini Gardens during the festivities for Saint Agatha, Catania’s patron saint. According to the indictment, the victim, aged 13 at the time, was walking with her 17-year-old boyfriend when they were stopped and surrounded by a group of seven young men. The boyfriend was restrained and beaten to prevent him from intervening, while two of the group — one adult and one minor, both of Egyptian origin — raped the girl inside a public restroom.
A total of seven Egyptian nationals were arrested following the horrific assault, as previously reported by Remix News at the time.
As reported by La Sicilia, both rapists have already been convicted in separate proceedings, but the remaining members of the gang are now being tried. In July 2025, the Catania Court of Appeal confirmed a 12-year and 8-month prison sentence for one of the adult attackers, rejecting the defense’s request for acquittal. The Court upheld the lower court’s ruling in full and confirmed compensation to the victims: the young girl and her then-boyfriend. Another member of the group, a minor convicted in an earlier trial, has since been transferred from prison to a community center to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
The four men currently on trial are accused not only of participating in the assault but also of private violence against the boyfriend, who was restrained and attacked. One of them, who later cooperated with investigators, provided information that helped identify the other gang members and has received a reduced sentencing request from the prosecution.
Earlier this year, the court heard detailed scientific testimony from forensic experts who described how DNA traces were collected from the scene and the victim’s clothing, linking the evidence directly to the already convicted attackers.
Investigators concluded that the assault was premeditated to some degree, as the group had followed the young couple through the park before surrounding them near the restroom area.
The parents of the victim have joined the proceedings as civil plaintiffs, alongside their lawyer, as has the girl’s former boyfriend. The courtroom has remained closed to the public throughout, due to the victim’s age.
On Dec. 2, statements from the victim’s family and the ex-boyfriend’s legal representatives are expected to be heard in court before final arguments are presented in February next year.
Prosecutor Trinchillo reportedly told the court that the evidence leaves “no room for doubt†about the defendants’ participation and that the attack represented “a coordinated and sustained act of violence against a defenseless minor.â€
