The radicalized political Left has adopted a number of “woke commandments,” according to author Simon Hankinson.

From demonizing borders to the erasure of history and gender, the radical Left has repeatedly rejected common sense, Hankinson asserts in his new book “The Ten Woke Commandments You Must Not Obey.”

A researcher and writer by trade, Hankinson writes that his work centers on “truth,” but “[o]bjective truth is always on the run under communism and dictatorship, but in the past few years, it has been under assault in the free world, too—even in the United States.”

Hankinson, a senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center, begins his work with “The First Commandment: You Shall Have No Borders,” an ideology that was largely put into practice under the Biden administration.

The “no border” ideology has its “origins in sort of international socialism and globalism,” he said.

“If you look at the people who oppose borders, they’re also people who tend to buy into the whole package of other anti-capitalist, anti-Western values, and that’s … captured, unfortunately, a portion of the Democratic Party,” Hankinson continued. “It’s not all of them, but it’s enough to move the needle, and I think they definitely wore the pants in the Biden administration.”

As with so many other Americans, Hankinson says liberals’ ever-further movement to the Left has made him more conservative.

“You know, 30 years ago, I definitely wouldn’t have identified myself as a conservative. I wasn’t much of a political person, really,” he said.

“At some point you wake up and you think, ‘Wait a minute … this gender ideology thing is absolutely insane, and I cannot support anyone who is trying to do this to children and to strip women of these things that they’ve won over generations of hard fighting,’” he said.

Hankinson dedicates two chapters of his book to the gender ideology movement that has swept the nation in recent years.

“I just saw that people’s lives were being ruined. And I have friends whose children have gone through this and who’ve had to make incredibly difficult decisions, and were being lied to—parents who were really trying to do the best for their kids, but were told by doctors and therapists and teachers things that just simply weren’t true,” he said.

With an aim to arm readers with “some facts and some concise arguments,” Hankinson said he hopes the book allows people to “politely engage” with one another across the political aisle.

“We’re very polarized, but ultimately, we do have more in common than we have apart,” he said. “We do have a Constitution [that] I think most people believe is a fundamentally excellent document that binds this country of very diverse people together, and we do all want a good future for our children living together in harmony, rather than polarized and hating each other.”
