Law enforcement officials confirmed that four individuals were killed and 20 others were injured during a mass shooting at a bar on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island on Sunday morning.

In a Sunday press release, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office announced that law enforcement officials received multiple reports regarding a shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island just before 1:00 a.m.

“Upon arriving at the scene deputies made contact with a large crowd of people, several of which were suffering from gunshot wounds,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office stated. “It was learned that hundreds of people were at the location when the shooting occurred. Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots.”

Sunday’s press release explained that multiple victims were transported to a local hospital by the Beaufort County Medical Services and that other victims “continued to show up” at hospitals to receive medical treatment due to injuries sustained during the shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that four victims were pronounced deceased at the scene of the shooting and at least 20 people were injured, with four being transported to local hospitals in critical condition. Law enforcement officials noted that Sunday’s incident remains under investigation and that the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office was “investigating persons of interest.”

“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said. “We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”

According to WJCL, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the four deceased victims as 22-year-old A’shan’tek Milledge, 22-year-old Kashawn Glaze, 33-year-old Chiraad Smalls, and 54-year-old Amos Gary.

Sharing his eyewitness account of what happened during the shooting incident on Sunday, Willie Turral, the owner of the bar, told WJCL, “I could hear what sounded like machine gunfire, and I could see the swarm of people coming in. Things happened so fast—bodies on the ground, people just trying to duck for cover.”

Henry Wright, a cook who was in the parking lot at Willie’s Bar and Grill during the shooting, told The Island Packet that he “heard a lot of shots” during the incident on Sunday.
