A new report claims that Oregon is expected to spend significantly more during its current budget period on a program that provides free health care for legal and illegal immigrants than the state will spend on the Oregon State Police.

According to a budget review by Oregon’s Legislative Fiscal Office, the state is expected to spend roughly $1.5 billion in state and federal taxpayer dollars from 2025 to 2027 on a program that provides health care benefits to illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, a budget review by Oregon’s Legislative Fiscal Office shows that the state is expected to spend only $717 million on the Oregon State Police from 2025 to 2027.

The Daily Caller reported that the Oregon Health Authority told the outlet that Oregon is currently expected to allocate roughly $1.2 billion to the “Healthier Oregon Program,” which was previously called “Cover All People.” The Oregon Health Authority added that the federal government is expected to provide 25 percent of the funding needed to provide health care benefits to illegal immigrants in the state.

According to the Oregon Health Authority, illegal immigrants are not required to supply evidence of long-term residency in Oregon to be offered taxpayer-funded health benefits. However, according to the Oregon Health Authority, federal funding for illegal immigrant health care benefits only applies to emergency and pregnancy care in the state.

While the Oregon Health Authority claimed that federal funding can only be used for emergency and pregnancy care for illegal immigrants, the budget document obtained by The Daily Caller indicates that the state is planning to obtain federal funding through loopholes that would allow the state to not have to follow federal guidelines for illegal immigrant health care.

The Daily Caller reported that Oregon obtains Medicaid funding without following federal guidelines on illegal immigrant healthcare by “taxing” hospitals in an effort to create an accounting loophole. The outlet noted that the state ultimately uses federal matching funds to pay hospitals back for the amount the state “taxed,” allowing Oregon to bypass federal regulations against providing health care for illegal immigrants.
