NILES, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who was crossing a street in Niles was hit and killed by a driver, police say.

Just before 7 a.m. Tuesday, 56-year-old Namita Smadder of Niles tried to cross Third Street at its intersection with Broadway Street when she was hit by a vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Niles man. The vehicle was attempting to make a right turn from eastbound Broadway Street, police said.

Officers with the Niles Police Department were called to the scene and found Smadder with head injuries.

She was treated at the scene before being brought to a nearby hospital and then transferred to a South Bend hospital where she later died, police said.
