This week House Republicans may censure and remove their Democrat colleague Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from her committee assignments following remarks and social media posts she made about conservative leader Charlie Kirk and his mourners.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., announced Monday that she was filing a resolution to censure the Minnesota congresswoman, and remove her from her assignments on the House Committee on Education and Workforce and the House Committee on the Budget of the House.

Kirk, 31, was assassinated while speaking on a college campus on September 10. His murder has inspired an outpouring of support and a promise from the Trump administration to dismantle terrorist networks.

“Ilhan Omar has shown us exactly who she is: she defends political violence and refuses to condemn the loss of innocent lives when it doesn’t suit her agenda, even the cold-blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk. Its dangerous, disgraceful, and beneath the United States Congress. She must be stripped of every committee assignment. No excuses,” Mace said in a post on X on Monday.

In an interview published on September 11 with left-wing journalist Mehdi Hasan on the media platform Zeteo, Omar weighed in on Kirk’s assassination.

“It was really mortifying to hear the news, to see the video. You know, all I could think about was his wife, his children, that image is going to live forever,” the Minnesota congresswoman told Hasan. “My heart does break for those babies.”

Omar has faced threats of violence of her own from different individuals, something she discussed in her interview with Hasan.

“I’m someone who deals with lots of death threats, and, you know, who’s had multiple people incarcerated because they threatened to assassinate me,” the Minnesota congresswoman explained.

At the same time, Omar did not shy away from criticizing the Turning Point USA founder.

“I mean, one of, you know, Charlie’s last tweets that I read was a video clip of him, I think in that clip, he talked about you and said, you know, Muslims are like, bringing an ideology and, you know, teaming up with trans and like socialists to bring about the end of Western civilization, which, you know, when you make a statement like that, then you are saying, you know, find every Muslim you can find in this country and make sure that they are no longer a threat, which is calling for our extinction,” Omar said.

“And so, it is important and that, you know, it had hundreds, millions, of views on it. I think it is important for people to see that kind of rhetoric and say, no, this is not the kind of person that I want to follow,” the Minnesota congresswoman continued.

Omar is also receiving condemnation for reposting a video on X that declared Kirk was a “Dr. Frankenstein and his monster shot him through the neck.”

Omar’s actions prompted a rebuke from Speaker of the House Mike Johnson in an interview with Fox News host Shannon Bream on Sunday.

“She clearly has no idea what she’s talking about. She has not followed Charlie. She’s playing into this characterization of him that the Left has been advancing,” Johnson said in the interview.

“There are people actually celebrating his murder online and that tells you everything you need to know about that side. We’ve got to get—cut through that,” the speaker continued.

Johnson led members of the House Monday evening in a prayer vigil to remember Kirk, who played an instrumental role in electing conservatives throughout the country.
