GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — National Give Something Away Day is more than just a reason to clean out your closet — it’s a celebration of kindness, generosity and community spirit.

Senior Director of Care Management at Priority Health Margaret Brown says that Tuesday should be filled with giving others a hand in any way possible, big or small.

“It really is just an opportunity for us to give back in meaningful ways,” she said. “It’s a day completely to be intentional about generosity, doing kind things for other people. And so it’s so important for us, because again it allows us to be intentional about the connections we’re making with our community, with our friends, with our families and just the positive impact we can have overall.”

Brown highlighted the positive impacts helping others has on one’s mental health.

“You’re really focusing on taking all of that energy and effort that you make focus in on your personal stressors, and using it in a more positive way to impact positively those around you,” she said.

If you have unused items or areas that are overflowing in your home, decluttering those spaces and even donating things can be helpful.

“If you have a less cluttered environment, you’re more prone to experience less anxiety, you’re more calm, you can have a better night’s rest, just a more healing environment overall,” Brown said.

As Tuesday winds down, Brown says there’s still plenty of time to help those around you, from giving a friend a night on the town to paying someone a small compliment that could make a big difference in their day. Any form of helping counts.

“It really is like the helper’s high in a way,” she said. “You’re happy, you’re excited, you just feel really good about doing things for other people."
