GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Naval officers have started two weeks of special training with new technology in northern Michigan.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center is leading Silent Swarm 25 at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center. The exercises started on Monday and will run through July 25.

NSWC says Silent Swarm is an annual event that focuses on new tools and how they can be used in the field.

“During this event, mariners can expect many small, unmanned surface, sub-surface and air vehicles in operation,” NWSC said in a statement. “All these unmanned platforms will have manned vessels in the vicinity for control and safety. If members of the public see vessels in the water or unmanned airborne systems, please do not attempt to approach or interfere with them.”

The experiments will use several different military radio frequencies, but nothing should interfere with regular communications.

The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center is run by the Michigan Air National Guard. It was built in the 1930s and first activated as a training ground in 1943. Â
