KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was killed and seven people were hurt in four shootings in Kalamazoo overnight.

Around 10:50 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were sent to the area of Krom Street near E Patterson Street for a shooting.

Responding officers found a 15-year-old boy in critical condition and a 41-year-old woman with an apparent gunshot wound to the ankle. KDPS said a 23-year-old man arrived at a nearby hospital with a similar injury. Their conditions have not been released.

Officers found multiple shell casings at the scene, suggesting that more than one firearm was used.

Around 12:15 a.m., a 28-year-old man reported that he had been hit in the arm by what appeared to be a stray bullet while at a bonfire on Center Street near Dwight Avenue. He told officers that he was unaware that he had been shot until he arrived at a nearby hospital. His condition has not been released.

Around 3 a.m., officers were monitoring a large crowd on W Paterson Street near Douglas Avenue when they heard gunfire. KDPS said they found a 34-year-old man hurt, who later died. His name has not been released.

Two other men, 29 and 23, had apparent gunshot wounds to their legs, KDPS said. Their conditions have not been released.

Officers found at least one firearm, KDPS said. They believe that multiple firearms were discharged.

Just after 4 a.m., officers were sent to the area of Woodward Avenue near Nola Street after receiving reports of shots fired at a home. Responding officers found an abandoned vehicle nearby with bullet damage. KDPS said they believe there was an exchange of gunfire involving at least two firearms based on evidence at the scene.

A 17-year-old later arrived at a nearby hospital with an apparent gunshot wound to the wrist, KDPS said. His condition has not been released.

KDPS said no suspects are in custody.

“This level of gun violence is unacceptable,” Chief David Boysen said in a release. “Our investigators are working around the clock to hold those responsible accountable. We’re asking residents to let us do that work, without adding more danger to our streets through retaliation.”

Residents should expect to see an increased police presence in the coming days.

Anyone with information is asked to call KDPS at 269.337.8139 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.

The four shootings remain under investigation.
