TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man sustained burns when a chemical reaction caused an explosion at an industrial site near Kalamazoo Monday.

It happened around 11:45 a.m. at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems on Elm Valley Drive, in the area of S. 9th Street and W O Avenue in Texas Township.

The Texas Township Fire Department said nitric acid — which is corrosive — came into contact with an "unknown chemical" in the lab, causing a chemical reaction and explosion.

A 60-year-old worker was hospitalized with chemical burns.

Firefighters say any chemical spills were contained to the lab. Hazmat teams cleaned up and conducted air monitoring.
