COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is dead after a house fire in Covert Township, police say.

The fire broke out around 9:50 p.m. Sunday on the 72,000 block of 36th Avenue, near 72nd Street, according to the Covert Police Department.

When first responders arrived on scene, witnesses told them the homeowner was still inside.

Firefighters entered the house and worked to bring the fire under control. They were able to put the fire out — but when they found the homeowner, he was dead, according to authorities.

Police described the homeowner as a 69-year-old man. His name was not immediately released.

The Covert Township Police Department and Michigan State Police are working to find out what caused the fire.

MSP, the Bangor Fire Department, the Watervliet Fire Department, South Haven Area Emergency Services and Van Buren Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.
